Hello,

Welcome to Worm Crusader. We are a small family that discovered the
benefits of worms by accident but have embraced them with extra
enthusiasm. Our goal is to pass along the benefits of worms to many
others and opportunities to learn and grow about related issues.

7-9-2008

On July 5, we had six people join us for our free workshop on making and
maintaining a worm bin. With all the info that is available on the internet,
one major lesson the workshop gives that the net can not- to touch the
bedding. Too often, worms die because the bin becomes too wet and the
conditions turn anaerobic (lack of oxygen.) The lack of oxygen will create a
gas that will kill your worms in a very short period of time.

Once you feel the moisture of a bin, then you will be more successful
keeping your worms alive and thriving. Getting an actual hands on will take
away the majority of mistakes people can make.

Another helpful benefit to the workshop is you get to see the actual system
working and seeing it work from an early stage to late stage. Recognizing
the time to harvest is crucial to keeping the herd growing and thriving.

Our next workshop will be Saturday July 19 at Cattail Creek Antiques and
Garden in Ruckersville, VA. The class starts at 9:30 and will take about 45
minutes for class and all the time needed for Q and A.

6-20-08  Kiddie Pools

We have recently discovered that kiddie pools make good growing beds
(so far).  The top is still yet to be perfected, but we manage by supporting
the sides to hold the wood top. They are the perfect depth and will easily
hold 15,000  or more. It's hard enough to keep out the little creatures from
below and soft enough to bend and flex if needed.

How's your garden?

Monday Morning greeted me with some interesting news that was bad. It
appears that the nations food chain is in peril with a shortage goods in
inventory. With rising oil prices, we are really starting to open up to our
dependence on oil to supply our food.

Some estimates state that the average distance our food travels is 800
miles. With all the chemical agents added to the land to keep it productive,
which are petroleum based, the underlying production costs to our food will
soon price the average consumer out of the market on some basic items.

In addition, commercial growing is continually providing health scares with
poisoning by bacteria and other agents. In addition, the wide spread use of
pesticides has an unknown effect on the environment and our long term
health.

So what do we do? First, start a garden. Second compost your waste.
Starting a garden is the first and simplest step to creating an
independence to high food costs. Food you grow and control the products
use to increase productivity will yield better food for you.

Our worms will make your composting much faster and be extremely fertile
due to the worm castings. With proper care and maintenance, you can
grow an awesome garden and be totally organic with worms.

Coming soon, we will be offering a site (within this one) where you can buy
local produce, meats and other products you may need without having to
pay high shipping costs (the price increases you see now are just starting.)

Here's how worms can help you build a super garden:
  • Mix worm castings with soil to increase beneficial microbes to the soil
  • Use Poop 2 O for maximum microbes
  • Practice good land stewardship - read all you can
  • Find (or purchase from us) worms in your yard and add to your
    garden
  • Feed garden wastes to worms to make worm castings
  • Add worm castings to your garden

Stayed Tuned for more on rising food costs.

Thanks for hanging out with us, we appreciate you reading our site. We will
be having some workshops soon. If you are interested in one of our
workshops or would like a presentation to your group, please call or email
at the number above.

This week we got the new site launched, finally and are slowly putting the
rest of the info online. This upcoming week, we will have some photos and
articles about making your own compost tea. Since the weather has really
gotten warm, in earnest, your flowers and plants will need help to beat the
heat and stay hydrated. Our worm tea will increase the efficiency of the
root system and enable to absorb water and nutrients with less energy
consumed.

If you have not done so yet, please see
www.soilfoodweb.com for an
interesting site about the ecology of the soil. It is well worth the time.

Saturday, we will have a compost tea make happening at Cattail Creek
Garden and Antiques in Ruckersville, come and see how the liquid fertilizer
is made. Call 434-466-9638 for directions.

6-2-08

This is the launch of an updated site for our small worm farm. Still have
much to add but we our now able to add some content. Our last site used
a platform that was very difficult to work on from a design standpoint.  The
new host provides a nice tool to deliver a better website.

We are currently sponsoring free Worm Tea (Poop 2 O) on select Fridays
in June. We are considering setting up a workshop to demonstrate how to
make this super organic liquid.
